The Technology Behind Practice Partner

What to look for in Medical Software Technology

The Practice Partner systems are built on solid and proven architecture. Practice Partner is a client-server application that runs on industry-standard platforms. The client-server architecture allows the processing tasks to be shared between the client and server, increasing the resources available to the workstations. Practice Partner provides an intuitive, easy-to-use graphical user interface while the server processes the requests and database transactions behind the scenes.

IT Foundation

The system architecture of your electronic medical record and practice management software is crucial in defining its long-term capabilities. Patient Records offers a highly flexible system design, making it both suitable and affordable for small and large practices.

Scalable Design

All of the Practice Partner systems allow clinics to start small and grow as their needs change - without having to change systems. Practice Partner's scalable design, built on key industry-standard, nonproprietary technologies that are crucial for long-term success, supports both the single-doctor clinic and the large multi-clinic enterprises.

Network Compatibility

The Practice Partner applications run across Ethernet networks, supporting either Microsoft Windows NT/2000 or Novell NetWare network operating systems utilizing TCP/IP or IPX protocols. For wide area networks, we recommend using Windows NT Terminal Server/Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Citrix MetaFrame (the number of servers running Citrix varies, depending on the number of concurrent Citrix users).

The Practice Partner applications can also be run over a wireless network. Battery-operated mobile devices can be run over wireless LANs utilizing standards such as the 802.11 or OpenAir standards. We strongly urge that Citrix be utilized in conjunction with wireless networks for optimal performance and reliability.

Choice of Database

Oracle, C Tree or other SQL databases. Practice Partner supports both centralized and decentralized deployment models. Practices that use a single database server operate in a centralized environment. Patients stored in a single database can be accessed from single or multiple locations. Charts can be electronically secured by practice, offering greater security for multi-clinic installations.

Interface Engine

Connections to external information is an important part of any medical record. Patient Records recognizes the importance of interconnectivity and offers a wide variety of electronic data interchange import/export features. Patient Records features both batch and real-time interfaces to laboratories, master patient indexes, electronic claims clearinghouses and payers, and other practice management systems. Practice Partner supports HL7, ASTM, and other EDI standards. These interfaces allow the transfer of data into and out of Practice Partner.

Client-Server

Supports a broad spectrum of client-server architecture. On the client side, Practice Partner supports Windows 95/98, Windows NT/2000, or Windows XP. Server operating systems supported include Novell NetWare, Windows NT/2000.

Application Service Provider (ASP)

In addition to being offered as a client/server application, Practice Partner Enterprise can also be implemented as an ASP (Application Service Provider) application. This configuration brings Practice Partner Enterprise into a practice via an Internet VPN (Virtual Private Network), eliminating the need to implement or maintain application and database servers.

The applications can be accessed at any workstation that has Internet access and the VPN client installed. Both encryption (triple DES) and secure authentication (SecurID) are part of the ASP offering.

Internet

Practice Partner quickly and seamlessly connects to the Internet without the use of outside programs. Using Practice Partner's built-in Web browser, users can access the World Wide Web, a local Knowledge Base (with both clinical and administrative information), or any other HTML document. The templates used for note creation can have embedded Web or HTML file links, allowing easy linkage to relevant clinical references.

Built-in Browser

Practice Partner connects to the Internet via Practice Partner Internet. Practice Partner Internet includes an integrated web browser that utilizes Microsoft's Internet Explorer to access any HTML-based document. These documents can reside on the Internet, on Intranets, in Practice Partner's Knowledge Base, or in other third party utilities (such as Practice Partner Patient Education).

Knowledge Base

Practice Partner's Knowledge Base allows users to download HTML-based documents onto the central server, providing important clinical and administrative information at the click of a button (without having to make a connection to the Internet). This is ideal for storing frequently accessed procedures and protocols.

Practice Partner Web View®

Practice Partner Web View® allows physicians to share Practice Partner Patient Records charts safely and conveniently using the Internet. This allows physicians, patients and consultants the ability to view Patient Records charts over the Internet using any PC with an Internet browser. The service also allows patients to request appointments and fill out registration forms prior to their first visit.

The system uses a safe and secure Internet connection and access is fully customizable at the discretion of the practice. Data is securely transmitted utilizing SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), XML (Extensible Markup Language) and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) protocols, and displayed using XSL style sheets.

Practice Partner Web View® is an easy and convenient way to reduce calls into your office and the need to send physical copies of patient charts. The service boosts productivity while also improving quality of care and referral management.

Connectivity

The physician's office can no longer be an island -- Practice Partner helps provide a bridge.

The days of the truly solo practice are gone. Today's physicians are woven into a complex fabric of institutional interrelationships that demand and require open and active communication. No matter where you are in the new health care system, Practice Partner offers an open link to the world—inside and outside of your office—that can connect you in the ways that you want to be connected.

Connection with your own in-house systems

Patient Records can be fully integrated with your in-house practice management system. Practice Partner also offers a fully integrated solution, linking Patient Records with Medical Billing and Appointment Scheduler.

Home

With a modem and a PC, Practice Partner is available wherever you are, at home or away, giving you full access to any chart on any patient.

Laboratory or other ancillary clinical data sources

Patient Records allows direct interfaces with critical information that you use every day, such as lab results or radiology reports. The system is smart enough to flag abnormal results and update all the appropriate health maintenance items.

The large office

Practice Partner is a proven performer in handling the complex daily requirements of the large single or multi-specialty practice, with current sites having more than 900,000 charts on line and actively seeing up to 3,000 people per day.

Integrated healthcare delivery networks and clinical data repositories

As healthcare systems pursue the goal of integrated patient information from all points of clinical contact, Practice Partner provides a natural link tying together the network and interfacing to clinical data repositories.

The networked practice

Standardization using across geographically separated practices establishes a foundation for linking physicians and patients to a common chart. Only Practice Partner has a proven track record in handling large transaction volumes to support ambitious standardization plans.

Scanning and faxing

Because most outside information comes in the form of paper, Practice Partner allows for easy insertion of scanned materials. And with Practice Partner's unique dot codes, scanned documents can be automatically inserted into the correct patient chart, updating all the necessary chart sections. Additionally, Practice Partner can also be used in conjunction with a fax server, allowing prescriptions or other materials to be faxed straight from the Practice Partner applications.
