Are You Ready for ICD-10?
Starting October 1, 2013, using the new, tenth edition of the International Classification of Disease will be mandatory. The goal of the upgrade is to give patients better care and to better document medical procedures and diagnosises.
There are two parts to the ICD-10
- ICD-10-CM - Clinical Modification for use in all US healthcare treatment settings. ICD-10-CM uses 3-7 alpha and numeric digits & full code titles. The format is very similiar to ICD-9-CM
- ICD-10-PCS - Procedure Coding System for use in US for inpatient hospital settings only. The new coding calls for 7 alpha or numeric digits, a jump up from the 3-4 numeric digits in ICD-9-CM.
Why the Change from ICD-9?
ICD-9 does not provide enough detail for patients's medical condietions or the procedures and services performed on hospitalized patients. The ICD-9 clinical modification is also 30 years old, outdated and inconsistent with modern medicine.
Key Features
- Greater Detail in Clinical Information
- Better Ability to measure health care services
- Improved grouping and reimbursement methodologies
- Easier to monitor public health
- Less likely to need supporting documents with claims
- Up-to-Date modern medical terminology & disease classification
- Provides Better Data for:
- Mortality and Morbidity
- Measure care
- Processing claims
- Clinical decisions
- Monitoring public health
- Identifying fraud & abuse
- Conduction research
