Novitas Solutions, Inc. (formerly Highmark Medicare Services), a Medicare contractor, has announced that some claims submitted during the first quarter of 2012 did not have the National Provider Identifier (NPI) properly recognized, and therefore the 10% incentive under the PCIP (Primary Care Incentive Payment) Program may not have been paid.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provides its Medicare contractors with a list of the NPIs that are eligible for the incentive payment under the PCIP. Quarterly, the shared system maintainer will compare CMS’ approved provider list to the claims processing system to identify the incentive payments to be made for that quarter. However, Novitas has identified that, for the incentive payment for the first quarter of 2012, some of the NPIs were not recognized by the shared system. Novitas has worked with the shared system maintainer to identify and correct the problem, and is currently working with them to determine how and when the programs can be rerun to properly identify and pay the incentive for those claims that were missed.
